Skype says Support for DSi Possible, Nintendo Denies Plans

Rumors about a Nintendo gadget having cell phone services were rubbished by Nintendo President Satoru Iwata when he said that the company was uninterested in releasing a device which needed a monthly subscription. Skype however, for the DSi is a better option and a Skype representative has said that the Skype software is technically feasible on the Nintendo DSi.

Nintendo DSi Skype

Skype is the voice-over-IP software used for voice chat over the internet, and could be on its way to the Nintendo DSi some time in the near future. Speaking to TechRadar, a Skype representative said, “Whilst we can’t comment on any future plans to bring Skype to Nintendo’s DSi, it would technically be possible.”

About the growth strategy of Skype the rep added, “Skype’s growth strategy is focused on product enhancements that will increase user delight, engagement, and adoption of paid services. This includes extending the Skype infrastructure and platform to bring Skype functionality wherever, whenever, and on whatever device or site people choose to use it.”

Although this is not a confirmation that the service will be heading to the DSi platform, it could, if Nintendo desires. But it seems Nintendo is not too keen on such a service for their handheld. CVG is reporting that Nintendo tells them, “We have no plans to release a Skype application for Nintendo DS or DSi.”

Skype software and services have been integrated into several open platforms including the application for the Nokia N97, Intel-based MIDs, and iPhone and iPod Touch. There is also a Lite version of the software for mobile phones which are Java-enabled.
