Sony Speaks about PC Store and UMDs

Yesterday we had reported that Sony had made the PlayStation Store available through the PC. However, many started to call this move as the death of the UMD format (Universal Media Disc). But that is not the case as the head of online marketing for Sony Computer Entertainment Europe, Darren Cairns clarified and said that this is not the case.

Sony UMD

Darren Cairns spoke with GamesIndustry.biz and explained, “The UMD business is still good for us and our publishers. It is still a growing market, and we are still selling a large number of PSPs on a weekly basis, so there are a large number of new people coming into the market. I don’t think that this would give us any cause for concern over UMD. I think they sit very well together. When you talk about the more casual games, pick-up-and-play games, you would definitely want to put them through the Store rather than have disc production, in to retail, and so on.”

Besides that, Cairns also spoke about the PlayStation Store on the PC. He said that they aim to get a great game content to the PSP users and they hope to make the Store predominant for game content.
