99 USD Ouya Android-based Game Console in the works

The future seems bright for games developed for Google’s mobile OS, as a 99 USD Ouya Android-based game console is reportedly under development. And what’s all the more interesting is that this machine is supposedly being created with a focus on free gaming.

Ouya Android-based Game Console

A listing for the console spotted on AngelList by The Verge is said have to have stated that any developer will be able to publish games for the system and also that each title will be free to play. If the latter part was not enough to swallow, here’s something more. The listing even went on to mention that the underlying hardware of the console will be ‘built to be hacked,’ with each buyer planned to get a development kit with every purchase.

Yves Behar, a designer, entrepreneur and sustainability advocate famous for his work with Jawbone, Puma, One Laptop Per Child and more, has apparently been roped into this project. Moreover, the list of advisers for the development comprises the likes of Amol Sarva of Peek and Peter Pham of Color. Ed Fries, a former VP of Microsoft is also claimed to be associated with this Android gaming console project which has Julie Uhrman of IGN as its founder and CEO.

At 99 USD (approx. Rs. 5,395), the Ouya Android-based game console looks like a casual gamer’s delight. And it sure doesn’t seem like a bad bet at all, but the fact that it won’t be able to run hardcore games which are meant for PS3s and Xbox 360s might put many off. Nevertheless, there’s no concrete information available right now about its details. We’ll have more on it if and when it turns official.
