Atari undergoes more losses due to shortage of hardware and decline in consumer demand for current games

Atari Logo Atari revealed their year-end financial results for the fiscal year of 2006 today. The company’s net loss for the period was $67.1 million. The year before, Atari posted a net income of $5.7 million. Atari’s net revenue was $218.7 million, down $189.1 from last year.

Brunno Bonnell, Chairman, CEO and Chief Creative Officer at Atari explains the results, saying, “Fiscal 2006 was a challenging year for the industry. A shortage of new hardware coupled with a softness in consumer demand for current generation games dramatically impacted results.”

It looks like Atari will be focusing on more casual gamers. Bonnell says, “We plan to exploit our back catalog in new markets. Additionally, we believe our IP is a perfect fit to meet the broad scope of games that consumers are looking for on casual sites.”

However, Atari will still make games for next-generation consoles. Some highlights from their upcoming release schedule include Neverwinter Nights 2 for the PC, Earthworm Jim for the PSP, and Test Drive Unlimited.
