Call of Duty: Black Ops Breaks Five Day Entertainment Industry Record

For a game leading a full-blown first person action-shooter series such as Call of Duty, breaking records and setting benchmarks anew shouldn’t present itself in an utterly surprising light. Inevitably performing so, Call of Duty: Black Ops has been reported to establish a new five day entertainment industry record, scoring more than any theatrical box office, book and video game release as it reached over 650 Million USD worth of sales globally.

“Call of Duty has become the first entertainment property in history to set five-day launch records for two consecutive years across all forms of entertainment. The title’s success illustrates the mass appeal of interactive entertainment as millions of consumers are choosing to play Call of Duty: Black Ops at unprecedented levels rather than engage in other forms of media. The number of people playing online and the number of hours they are playing demonstrates how online gaming has become a mainstream form of entertainment and certainly validates Activision Blizzard’s leadership role in online entertainment,” commented Robert Kotick, CEO, Activision Blizzard.

Reportedly, Call of Duty: Black Ops also registered two new records on Xbox Live. By its launch day’s ending, the game logged about 5.9 million multiplayer hours of online gameplay being enjoyed by gamers throughout the day. Additionally, the title has set a new Xbox Live Record being the biggest entertainment launch logging approximately 2.6 million different players in one day. According to internal Activision estimations, Black Ops only surpassed the previous record set by Modern Warfare 2.

Apart from the aforementioned records, the game’s release was also reported to have become the best-selling video game launch of all time on Amazon.com and GameStop. Activision appears to be anticipating Call of Duty: Black Ops to perform even better in the retail game market as the holiday shopping season has just begun.
