80GB PS3 to be Discontinued by Sony?

Sony had stopped selling the 60GB PS3 and the 20 GB PS3 long ago. Now it seems that the 80GB PS3 could join that list! Gaming news website PS3 Fanboy is reporting that the 80GB version of the PS3 could be abandoned. They received a scan of a memo from an anonymous Best Buy employee.

80GB PS3 to be Discontinued?

This is what the unverified memo read: “The 80GB version of the PS3 is going closeout and won’t be replaced at this time. Only the 40GB version of PS3 will be sold in Best Buy stores at this time. This means that there currently isn’t a version that is PS2 compatible.”

There were some rumors stating that Sony was going to discontinue a model of the PS3. Now it seems that it was the 80GB version that will be axed. It sells for $499 (approx. Rs. 19,650), making it the most expensive next generation console. The 80GB PS3 is available only in North America. Japan as well as Europe, both just has the cheaper 40GB model, which does not have backward compatibility.
