It looks like the future is bright for Sony in the UK. Beating all expectations, the PS3 sold a whooping 165,000 units to PS3 become the fastest selling home console in the UK. The only console to better than the PS3 was the PSP, which sold 185,000 units when it was launched in 2005.
According to the sales monitoring firm Chart Track, PS3 is the most expensive console to be released in the UK, launching at £424.99 (approx. Rs. 36,000) with 22 games from 7 different publishers while PSP had 24 games available from 11 different publishers. PS3 launch software registered about 3 times more units than PS2, but with similar software to hardware attachment rate of 1.65 compared to PS2’s 1.67. Resistance: Fall of Man and MotorStorm are the two top selling games for Sony’s next-gen video game console.
PS3 sales figures are better than those of Wii (105,000) and the Xbox 360 (70,000) but the interesting thing is, Wii was a sell out when it was launched in December 2006. Sony had said that for the European launch, around 220,000 units were for UK. It seems that some of the consoles are still lying in the stores!
