Nintendo Wii Hits 30 Million Landmark in US

Like players who love flaunting personal records and accolades, companies who package gaming platforms too like keeping a track of their achievements. Here is some news from Nintendo’s sales department which reveals that the company has successfully sold over 30 million units of the Wii in the US alone. This milestone has been accomplished within 45 months of the system’s launch.

Wii entered the gaming ring in November of 2006 with a string of games, infusing fresh experiences. Encompassing accessories such as the Wii Remote and Nunchuk controllers along with a Wii MotionPlus, the console incorporates two titles namely, Wii Sports and Wii Sports Resort.

Cammie Dunaway, Nintendo of America’s Executive Vice President of Sales & Marketing, notes, “More than any other video game system in history, Wii has expanded the world of video games to new audiences. This milestone is another reminder that people want fun games they can play with others – all at a value-minded price.”

According to a study conducted by NPD Group, Wii Play, Mario Kart Wii and Wii Fit occupy the first three positions in the US top ten best-selling games published by Nintendo. The research also notes the top ten best-selling games for the Wii developed by third-party publishers. Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock published by Activision takes the peak position in this table followed by Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games from Sega and Lego Star Wars: The Complete Saga from LucasArts.

The company plans to further elevate gamers’ experience by introducing new titles for the platform. This year, Nintendo will expand the assortment of games on the console with Metroid: Other M on August 31, 2010 while Samurai Warriors 3 marks its debut on September, 27 2010. Kirby’s Epic Yarn and Wii Party make their way to the system later in Fall.

The holiday season will see the advent of Donkey Kong Country Returns, FlingSmash and PokéPark Wii: Pikachu’s Adventure. Besides, Wii will also be inundated with games including 2K Play’s New Carnival Games, EA Sports’ NBA JAM, GoldenEye 007 from Activision, Just Dance 2 from Ubisoft, Disney’s Epic Mickey and Sonic Colors from Sega.

Draped in white and black cases, the Wii console is available for an estimated price of 199.99 USD (approx. Rs. 9,310).
