Microsoft has announced the Gears of War Global Xbox Live Tournament where gamers from all over the world will battle each other in ranked multiplayer matches on Xbox LIVE leaderboard play.
Cliffy B, Gears of War Lead Designer said, “We are ecstatic to offer the chance for gamers across the world to come together and share the glories of blowing apart someone into little chunks. May the best man, or Locust, win.”
Registrations are already open and will continue until May 6, 2007. The four-week tournament, which will commence on April 9, 2007, will be conducted in association with World Cyber Games. The top 11 finalists in the world with the highest individual scores will be given the grand prize, that is, a trip for two to vie in the Grand Final, which will be held in July.
In addition, the top four eligible ranked players from each participating country will get a three-day, two-night trip to their country’s 2007 World Cyber Games National Championship event. Of course there are other secondary prizes like an Xbox 360 package, which will have an Xbox 360 Pro System console, Viva Piñata, PGR 3, Xbox LIVE Arcade Unplugged Volume 1, Kameo: Elements of Power and a 12-month Xbox LIVE subscription as well as Gears of War bonuses such as faceplates.
It seems like Gears of War could soon replace Counter-Strike as the best tourney game. Of course, CS is a PC game while Gears of War is a console game, but the popularity it has been receiving from the time it was released is overwhelming. Too bad, Microsoft has not introduced the Xbox Live in India, as gamers here would have loved to compete in this tourney.
