Gaming Industry Veterans Speak About Controllers and Non-Gamers

Game controllers are very important and the likes of Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo pumped a lot of money for the development of controllers that would appeal to the gamers. But what about the non-gamers as they are also an important part of the consumers who are buying video games.

Now video games news website GamesIndustry.biz reports that industry veterans like Phil Harrison from Sony and Peter Molyneux from Lionhead spoke about the game controllers and the impacts that they have on non-gamers. Phil Harrison, the outgoing Sony executive said, “You hand somebody a game controller and it’s like you’ve handed them a live gun or a hand grenade with the pin taken out.”

His thoughts were echoed by Peter Molyneux, who is the head of Microsoft’s Lionhead studio. He stated, “We don’t use half the buttons on the 360 controller simply because the whole dream I have got is that someone will sit down to play Fable 2 who has never played a game before and they can play with someone who’s played games the whole of their lives. I wish there wasn’t so many buttons on the controller. You have to approach that in design terms by thinking you’ve only got one button.”

But the veteran of the gaming industry was all praises for the Wiimote and even the iPhone. Phil Harrison called the game controller of Nintendo’s next generation controller as a non-game centric device that has brought an element of democratization to controlling videogames. He also felt that the iPhone has impressed him and mentioned an incident where a two-year old used the device.
