No more Gold subscriptions for watching Netflix and Hulu on Xbox?

The long-awaited opening up of access to Netflix, Hulu and other streaming apps through Xbox consoles is on the brink of happening, suggests a new report. Right now owners of the Xbox 360 and Xbox One systems need to possess Gold subscriptions in order to view content on these streaming services, while also paying their individual monthly rentals. No other console or set-top box for that matter demands such a premium.

Ars Technica has been told by its sources that Microsoft employees have been informed about plans for making these changes. Following this, the Xbox Live Gold requirement will stay limited only to multiplayer gaming and other little things it is used for. No doubt, Microsoft will be losing a sizable amount of revenue due to this decision, but it seems it has plans to make up for that by adding some other services behind the paywall.

The abandonment of Gold subscriptions for TV services like Netflix and Hulu is most likely to be announced at this year’s E3 in June. Right now, consoles like the PS3, PS4, Wii and the Wii U offer access to these services without any barriers which has raised considerable pressure on the Xbox consoles to follow suit. And then there is also the rise of steaming boxes like Apple TV, Amazon Fire TV and more to be considered.

We’ll have more on this Xbox news when additional details about it are out.
