A few weeks ago, we had reported that the Sony PSP had crossed the ten million mark in Japan. One of the top-selling games for the handheld gaming console in Japan was Phantasy Star Portable. Now Sega has sent word that the sci-fi role-playing game Phantasy Star Portable will hit the western shores in 2009.

Phantasy Star Portable features more than one hundred and fifty items exclusive to the PSP. The game is set after the events of Phantasy Star Universe. Gamers partner with a brand new character, Vivienne. They will be able to choose from four different races and three class types and have to investigate an eruption of wild animals, which may have the bits and pieces of a once-powerful mean force.

Phantasy Star Portable for the PSP will feature the single-player Story Mode and the Phantasy Star Universe co-op gameplay. Gamers will be able to play with up to three others via the PSP wireless connection. There are also exclusive new missions and hardcore features, some of which can be unlocked by achieving difficult goals.

Gary Knight is the European Marketing Director for SEGA Europe. He said, “The Phantasy Star Universe series offered a compelling role-play experience with excellent multi-player modes in delightful atmospheres. These aspects are represented authentically in Phantasy Star Portable, including exclusive new features just for the PSP version allowing fans of this series to enjoy the quest on the move.”
