No backwards compatibility on the PS4 console for now, confirms Sony

In news that’s not at all going to please PS4 owners, Sony has officially confirmed that adding backwards compatibility to its home console is not something it’s interested in right now. This topic has gained steam particularly due to Microsoft having revealed that its Xbox One will soon start playing Xbox 360 games without any hassles.

Yesteryear consoles were adept at playing previous-gen games, but the PS4 and the Xbox One had both chosen to abandon backwards compatibility in favor of superior hardware. However, both Sony and Microsoft had revealed that this feature will indeed be doled out to their consoles in the future.

The PS4 is no stranger to previous-gen games however, as thanks to its subscription-based PlayStation Now platform gamers are able to stream PS3, PS2, PS and PSP titles on the next-gen system using the power of the cloud. However, this is pricy and requires a constant Internet connection, and gamers would rather prefer just inserting their old discs and playing them on their new consoles.

Sony’s Shuhei Yoshida has spoken to Eurogamer on this matter and has revealed that it is going to be ‘super challenging’ to achieve backwards compatibility on the PS4. He has furthermore also gone on to convey that ‘I never say never, but we have no plans.’ The company it seems is content with the way things are moving forward for PlayStation Now right now.

Besides, introducing backwards compatibility on the PS4 would effectively mean that the massive amount of time and money which Sony has invested in building the PS Now platform will be going to waste. Let us see how the same feature is received by Xbox One gamers once it’s out this fall.
