Guitar Hero: Smash Hits Release Date Revealed

Activision has revealed the release date for its Guitar Hero: Smash Hits, the compilation game which is to feature some of the franchise’s most popular songs. The release date was revealed through a trailer of the game which is all set to ship to retailers in late spring.

The rhythm game, formerly known as Guitar Hero: Modern Hits, serves up 48 songs which have featured on previous installments of the franchise including Guitar Hero, Guitar Hero II, Guitar Hero Encore: Rocks the 80s, and Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock. And the tracks featured are not mere copies, but add drum and vocal parts too.

We hear that Guitar Hero: Smash Hits will have the Music Studio song creation and sharing mode and will also allow for both online and offline modes for single and multiplayer guitaring and rocking. Gaming blog Kotaku reports that so far only a small fraction of the soundtrack has been revealed. The songs which have been announced as playable tracks in the game are:

From Guitar Hero:
Bark at the Moon (Ozzy Osbourne).
I Love Rock ‘n Roll (Joan Jett and The Blackhearts).
Killer Queen (Queen).

From Guitar Hero II:
Carry on Wayward Son (Kansas).
Free Bird (Lynyrd Skynyrd).
Killing in the Name (Rage Against The Machine).
Message in a Bottle (The Police).
Them Bones (Alice in Chains).

From Guitar Hero Encore Rocks the 80s:
I Wanna Rock (Twisted Sister).
Nothin but a Good Time (Poison).

Guitar Hero III Legends of Rock:
Barracuda (Heart).
Through the Fire and Flames (DragonForce).

The trailer pegs Guitar Hero: Smash Hits for a June 16, 2009 release for the Xbox 360, PS2, PS3 and Wii video game platforms.
