Microsoft, DirecTV Partner for New Pro-Gaming Series

Microsoft has gotten into an agreement with DirectTV and IGN and a group of other companies to arrange a new pro-gaming series that will launch next year. The Championship Gaming Series is a new professional gaming league that will beam competitions solely on DirectTV. Competitors will play games including Battlefield 2, Project Gotham Racing, Halo 2, Dead or Alive 4 and Counter-Strike. DirectTV will take over a 16,000-square-foot aircraft hanger at the former Treasure Island Naval Base in San Francisco and convert it into an indoor video game arena.

Eric Shanks, Executive Vice President, DirecTV Entertainment, says, “Everyone who goes to these tournaments will be able to participate in some way, whether it’s through a Beat The Pros competition or an open gaming event With regard to our league and team structure, what we’ll do next year will be different than anything that’s been done in competitive gaming to date.”

To adjust its broadcasting for next year’s opening season, DirecTV will hold three events this year. The first of these competitions will take place on July 21. Production company A. Smith & Co. will make use of 16 HD cameras to capture the two-day invitational event. DirecTV is now looking to start the first professional sports-style gaming league.
