Zapak and Jagex Launch RuneScape in India

Zapak is a company in India known for its vast selection of games. Now we have word that Zapak Digital Entertainment has tied up with English-based developer Jagex Games Studio to bring the world’s largest free MMO game, RuneScape, to India. Zapak will be the exclusive marketing and distribution partner for the game in India. Present at the launch event were COO of Jagex, Rob Smith, COO of Zapak, Rohit Sharma, and Bollywood actor, Aftab Shivdasani.

Zapak RuneScape will also be the official game for the seventh season of MTV Roadies. A statement from the company reads, “The game play for Runescape for the 1st 7 levels incorporates the 7 sins of the MTV Roadies journey this year.”

“Indian gaming industry is growing very fast and according to the recent FICCI-KPMG Media & Entertainment Industry Report the gaming industry is expected to grow over four-fold to reach INR 27.4 billion in 2013. RuneScape has been developed to appeal to multiple demographics and it will make its mark in India. India is an important market for us and who else better than Zapak, the top gaming company in India, to partner with to launch the same in the country today,” said Rob Smith, Chief Operating Officer, Jagex Games Studio.

Rohit Sharma, COO, Zapak Digital Entertainment added, “RuneScape is amongst the top online games in the world. With over 6 million users a month it is the worlds second largest MMOG (Massively Multiplayer online game). We are very excited to exclusively launch this game in India. This is line with Zapak’s continuous endeavour to provide the Indian consumer with world class gaming content.”

Developed by Jagex Games Studio, RuneScape is a fantasy MMO role playing game, which runs in the web browser. The game is implemented on the Java platform and incorporates 3D rendering. Having approximately 104 million active accounts, the game is recognized by the Guinness World Records as the world’s most popular free MMORPG.

RuneScape is available for free or with a subscription for those players who want access to a greater variety of options. Zapak has launched both the standard and premium version of the game in India. RuneScape goes live today October 8, 2009, and can be accessed from its official Indian website.
