University of Houston introduces new Wii Performance class

Wii video games have always been popular with gamers all around the world since its debut in November 2006. We now have word that the gaming console will be incorporated into the physical education classes held at the University of Huston. The class is been dubbed as the Wii Performance class (PEB 4197).

“We thought this was a good way to reach those students who might not take a weight-training class or a soccer class, but would play an active game like a Wii Fit or Wii Sports. These students still will learn about nutrition and health and fitness that will help them out in the long run. We’re hoping that this class opens students’ eyes to what they’re eating and how active they are and should be,” shared Ben Hoffman, instructor for the new Wii Performance class.

The new fall semester in the University of Houston department of health and human performance will see the inclusion of the Wii Performance class. The games that are slated to be played are incorporates to illustrate posture and centre of balance as well as improve the students knowledge on fitness and health.

“Our department conducts a host of research into the epidemic of obesity, not only its root causes, but ways to combat it and the diseases related to it. Using the Wii games can be both fun and an effective tool. We anticipate that many students will want to take this class,” added Jessica Wheeler, program coordinator.

They will also learn about the basic principles of proper nutrition and how to maintain a healthy body weight. Students will be given assignments like tracking the activities they take part in as well as monitoring their calorie intake. The class can hold 20 people and is eligible for any student. They will get one credit hour for the Wii Performance class.
