Nintendo Advises Young Children Against Playing 3D Games on the 3DS

At E3 2010, the latest Nintendo handheld console namely the 3DS has been well-received by attendees with its glasses-free 3D gaming display. A little while back we even divulged that the company came out with a reel of retro titles like Kid Icarus, Star Fox, Super Mario Bros. among others for the portable gaming device.

However, Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime disclosed to Kotaku that children below the age of seven are advised against playing games in 3D. Fils-Aime stated, “We will recommend that very young children not look at 3D images. That’s because, (in) young children, the muscles for the eyes are not fully formed…”

The Nintendo of America president also added that the caution being thrown out to kids is not just against the 3DS. He further revealed, “This is the same messaging that the industry is putting out with 3D movies, so it is a standard protocol. We have the same type of messaging for the (1990s Nintendo virtual reality machine) Virtual Boy, as an example.”

Although targeting very young children with his statement, he also revealed that it mainly pertains to kids specifically under the age of seven. The company has however fashioned games that do entice children like the Nintendogs sequel Nintendogs + Cats on the 3DS.

As Kotaku reports, a slider is provided on the system which aids players in decreasing the 3D display and eventually shutting it off altogether. This will leave the game graphics with a more flat look.
