Nintendo released its new handheld console, the DSi, in the beginning of April in the United States. Now Nintendo has revealed that the DS line of handheld consoles has seen a record all-time high in sales during the month of April in the US, according to the NPD Group. The global market and research company says that Nintendo has sold more than 1.04 million units of the DS Lite and DSi combined in the US, with over 827,000 units of the DSi being sold and about 215,000 DS Lite units being sold. Meanwhile, sales of the Wii home console are also going strong, having 340,000 Wii consoles sold in the US in April. This number is higher than that of all the other present generation home consoles combined and takes the total number of Nintendo Wiis sold in the US, to almost 20 million since the console’s November 2006 launch.

Of the 10 best sellers of April, six games published by Nintendo make the cut, with Wii Fit coming in at top spot having sold more than 470,000. Pokemon Platinum Version ranks in at number 2 having sold over 432,000 copies, with Mario Kart and Wii Play coming in at third and fourth respectively having sold over 209,000 and 170,000 in that order. Also, at seventh place is New Super Mario Bros. with nearly 119,000 copies sold, and at eighth place is Mario Kart DS having sold more than 112,000 units.

Nintendo’s consoles seem to be very popular not only in the US but also in native Japan and across Europe. Recently we reported that Nintendo had populated Japan with one DS for every 5 people.
