The more advanced 40 nm GPU means a greater number of transistors in the same space leading to better performance, and reduced power consumption. This makes the MSI R5870/R5850 series more efficient. The entire new series is optimized for the yet-to-be-released Windows 7, and supports DirectX 11 / Shader 5.0, and the series not only supports OpenGL 3.1 but also offers support for the newest OpenCL standard.

The MSI R5870/R5850 series graphics cards also support the new ATI EyeFinity technology, which means that you now have triple screen output option with just a single graphics card. Having three screens, instead of one or two, results in a much more immersive gameplay experience. In using the EyeFinity technology, one of the outputs must go through the Display Port interface.
