Gamers happy with existing franchises, says Activision CEO

Bobby Kotick, CEO of Activision has never been shy to say exactly what he feels, even if it might “tick” some people off. His latest comments seem sure to ruffle a few feathers among some segments of the fan base. In an interview with Economist.com, Kotick says that the constant calling for new ideas and content is reflected only in a very tiny group of gamers and that most are happy with sequels.

“A small segment of very vocal gamers say everything has to be new and different every year,” Kotick states, in reply to the notion that Activision is too keen on putting out sequels. “Actually, people are happy with existing franchises, provided you innovate within them.”

You can’t really argue with him on this, to a great extent. Take a look at the recent best selling titles for the modern consoles. Almost all of them figure 3s and 4s in their names, reinforcing the idea that sequels do better with the gaming audience. Although most argue that there is not much truly new content in the many Guitar Hero titles that Activision has churned out over the years.
