Wii Could Exceed PS2 Sales: Satoru Iwata

Buoyed by positive sales figures, Nintendo President Satoru Iwata is now aiming to break more records. In an interview with Reuters, he said that the sales of Nintendo Wii could top that of Sony’s Playstation 2.

Wii Could Exceed PS2 Sales

Satoru Iwata told Reuters, “Sony’s PS2 sales of 100 million units is an extraordinary number that our home game console business has not achieved. But if we can make our bid to expand the gaming population a continued success, we could exceed that. I wouldn’t say there is no overlap between the group of customers Sony is targeting and the group of users that Nintendo is targeting. But that overlap is quite small”

He also explained that Sony’s decision to cut the price of PS3 and introduce a slimmer PSP would not have substantial effects on Nintendo’s operations. Iwata revealed that the hardware side of Wii’s console business has already turned profitable. It is quite a regular feature for gaming firms to continue protracted losses in the hardware business while making money from software sales.
