Technology that lets Players Control Games with their Brains Unveiled by Emotiv Systems

Australian firm Emotiv Systems has unveiled a new technology that will allow games to respond to the players’ emotions and let players maneuver objects in the game using the power of their thoughts.

Emotiv Systems also released an Emotiv Development Kit (EDK), which comes with Project Epoc, a headset that is able to read the electric signals of the human brain.

Details of the EDK:

  • The Expressiv suite can identify facial expressions in real-time, allowing developers to create characters that respond to the expressions of the player, such as smiles and winks.
  • The Affectiv suite measures players’ discreet emotional states, allowing a game to respond to the player’s emotions, such as excitement or calmness.
  • The Cognitiv suite detects players’ conscious thoughts, enabling them to move or manipulate objects just by thinking about an action, such as push, pull, lift or rotate.
  • The ‘brain computer interface’ technology works by observing a person’s electrical brain activity and processing it so that computers can take inputs from the human brain. Human thoughts and emotions can therefore control and influence an application. The human brain is made up of approximately 100 billion nerve cells.

Nam Do, CEO & co-founder, Emotiv Systems said, “The games industry is mature for a revolution in the way players interact with a game. Current interfaces, such as keyboards and controllers, are comparatively fundamental and non-intuitive and are out-of-keeping with the sophistication levels of today’s games and the movement towards more immersive environments. Brain computer interfaces radically change the way players interact with a game and, as such, have a profound effect on the gaming experience. Developers are looking to this technology to take their games to another level, to set apart their products and to retain their fans.”

And we thought the Wii mote would remain as one of the most innovative products for a long time! However, what remains to be seen is which one of the Big Three. i.e. Microsoft, Nintendo or Sony, adopts this technology first.
