Halo 3 Held Responsible for Bad Box Office

The trend continues… Everyone wants to blame video games for their misfortunes or wants to make it a part of their propaganda. First we had lawyers and politicians who dissed video games. Now Advertising Age has an interesting report that states that executives for the film studios are blaming Halo 3 for the worst October ticket sales in years.

Halo - Master Chief

Although a spokesperson from Paramount refused to say whether Halo 3 had indeed affected them, Adage reports that most of the movie execs are of the view that most of the audiences are hooked on playing Microsoft’s and Bungie’s first person shooter. In fact, MS had marketed the game like a film and it has reaped sweet rewards.

What’s more is that the going could get tough in the future as GTA 4 is expected to release next year and many people are backing it to top Halo 3. Mike Hickey is an analyst at Janco Partners, a research in firm in Denver. He has predicted that Grand Theft Auto 4 from Take 2 Interactive’s Rockstar Games could conceivably ship 9.5 million units in its first week.

It is increasingly becoming clear that the video game industry is taking on the film industry in terms of money. Halo 3 really did well but as mentioned above GTA IV could break many records as it will release on the PS3 as well as the Xbox 360.
