7 Best Mech Games

We’ve put together a list of the best Mech games to satiate your need for robot warfare. This Sci-Fi genre isn’t the most popular in the industry, but it does have a good following with dedicated fans that just can’t get enough. Titles here have been available in plenty, but not all of them make the cut.

You’ll also find them for different platforms, albeit the majority of releases happen for consoles. Be it the first and second generation PlayStation and Xbox, the latest consoles or even PC, we’ve got something for everyone in this compilation. So in no particular order, here are some of the finest releases in this genre.

1. Hawken:

Hawken

Hawken is one of the most realistic titles you’ll find in the genre. It’s a free-to-play multiplayer release which is set on a colonized planet where giant robots fight it out. The environment here is just beautiful and battles which are fast-paced take place in partially destroyed cities.

You’ll have multiple robot choices and a lot of customizations as well. The gameplay is basically first-person where you are seated in the cockpit. The biggest disappointment of Hawken is that you can’t perform melee attacks yet. So no, there’s no way of ripping robots apart with bare hands like you seen in anime.

2. Steel Battalion:

Steel Battalion

More than a game, Steel Battalion acts as a simulator. It was release for the original Xbox back in 2002 and it comes with its own custom controller with two sticks and 40 buttons in total. Capcom is the brains behind this title and it attempts to give you a very realistic feel of actually piloting robots which are known as vertical tanks.

The beauty of this release is that you’ll have to manually start up the machine and its operating system by pressing various buttons on the controller before heading out into combat. If you’re looking forward to getting hold of Steel Battalion, expect to pay a premium for the entire package.

From Software has come a long way with the AC series which first debuted on the PlayStation and the latest edition was just launched this September. Armored Core 5: Verdict Day is the fifteenth installment and it’s available for the PS3 as well as Xbox 360. The storyline here isn’t much and it involves a fight over natural resources.

Multiplayer, however, is the main focus where you join or create an online team with a goal of dominating areas. There are over 90 playable missions. The plus point of AC5 is the ridiculous amount of customizations and you can also equip you machines with various types of items and weapons.

4. Front Mission Evolved:

Front Mission Evolved

Front Mission Evolved is the second PC release on this roster and it’s also available for the PS3 and Xbox 360. This title is the eleventh in the series and is even a spin-off. It features third-person gameplay where you battle it out in machines called Wanderung Panzer or Wanzer in short.

Where the story is concerned, you step into the shoes of Dylan Ramsey, an engineer, who gets recruited into the USN Army after a few tragic events. The entire campaign is linear and combat is quite fast-paced. Apart from single player, there are various modes for online play. You can either head into battle alone or invite several other players.

Set on the Kentares IV planet, the title follows Ian Dresari who’s the heir to the throne of Kentares, but is betrayed by his cousin. With help from a resistance, you take back what’s rightfully yours. Your choices here will determine the outcome of the story. While the title is a bit too old for multiplayer, you can take a look at Mechwarrior Online a free-to-play release for Windows which went live back in September.
