Sales of Xbox 360 in India: The Story
Xbox 360, the only next-gen console to be launched in India. Yet it is still one of the most mysterious gaming devices in terms of the total numbers sold. There were many reports on international gaming websites such as Kotaku, Joystiq and Gamasutra regarding the Indian chapter of the Xbox 360. So we decided to investigate the real story behind the Xbox 360 in India and opted to do a telephonic survey. We went to the Xbox website and found out the names and the numbers of the dealers who were selling the Xbox 360 in India. The stats were quite fascinating as we found that the premium version was doing much better than the core version.
We had to call the dealers as when we contacted Microsoft, they downright refused to reveal the Indian figures and said, “we only reveal global figures.” We faced a lot of problems as we had to call all the dealers. There were 509 dealers in India who sell the Xbox 360. We called up each and every one of them, literally. But, the thing was, some of the numbers given in the list were either wrong or switched off or were continuously ringing. Of course, there were some “smart” dealers too who refused to divulge details of their “products”. So in the end, we got the data from 123 dealers all over India.

Sales figures on Xbox 360 in India :-
Don’t be surprised when you add 235 and 458 and you don’t get 839. That is because some of the dealers did not want to reveal the exact figures.
Now let’s break those figures. Out of the total Xbox 360 consoles sold, 29% were in the Western Zone, 22% were in the Northern Zone, just 8% in the Eastern Zone while the Southern Zone, which sold most of the Xbox 360 consoles, has a mammoth share of 41%.
Coming to cities, we divided India on to 9, i.e. eight major cities and one Rest of India. Here’s how the figures mapped out:
These were the numbers of the console sold. Let’s talk about Xbox 360 game CDs. A total of 1359 Xbox 360 CDs were sold, out of which, 44% were sold in the Southern Zone, then came the Western Zone with 41%, followed by the Northern Zone at 13%. Here too, like the Xbox 360 consoles, Eastern Zone was last with just 2%.
Apart from all this, we had a chance to talk to the dealers themselves and many of them gave their valuable time and spoke about the Xbox 360 and Microsoft. Some of the comments what we received were nice, many of them not. This is what we observed after talking to most of them:
- There are lots of enquires for the Xbox 360.
- In some areas, most people do not know what the Xbox 360 is exactly.
- Microsoft has not done enough to advertise the product.
- The graphics of the Xbox 360 are amazing.
- The price is too high. Indian consumers find the Xbox 360 costly.
- However, the Premium version on the Xbox 360, which costs Rs. 27, 750 (approx $630) is doing better than the Core version, which costs Rs, 19, 990 (approx. $450). These prices are above the average monthly wage of the common Indian.
- Most of the dealers refer to the Premium version as the ‘Pro’ version.
- Most of the customers rather buy the PS2 and if they have more money, are waiting for the PS3 to release in India.
- People also prefer the PS2 as pirated CDs of the console are readily available while there is no way to get a pirated Xbox 360 CD.
- Most of the sales were good in the affluent areas of the city.
- Dealers want that Microsoft should introduce more schemes like the ICICI one, and they want that scheme expanded.
- Most of the dealers were unhappy with the sales, but some of them were very happy with the way Xbox 360 was selling at their shop.
- 21 dealers scored ducks, i.e. they failed to sell a single Xbox 360 console or an Xbox 360 game.
- There were 2 dealers who were so frustrated that they gave up the dealership for the Xbox 360 console.
- There were many dealers who had just tied up with Microsoft and they were yet to receive stocks.
- Most of the dealers were happy with the Kiosks and said people enjoyed the Xbox 360, but as we mentioned above, left after hearing the price.
- There was a dealer who said, after seeing the Xbox graphics on the Samsung LCD, a customer instead opted for the LCD!
What we can make out is, that compared to the global figures, Xbox 360 is not doing that well in India. But the ones who will be happy to hear this are Sony, as Sony PS2 has become a rage over here. But on the flip side, if Indian customers find the Xbox 360 expensive, they will definitely find the PS3 steep too.

Is there a way to find statistics for console sales in India — similar to NPD Group’s sales tracking? It sounds like it’s been difficult to get accurate numbers on the Xbox 360, but I’m looking for installed user bases primarily regarding the PS2, PSP, DS and possibly the Wii.

People are waiting for a stable modchip for the 360 so they can buy the gray market/import games. Of course, a price cut from Microsoft and better publicity wouldn’t hurt, as well as more knowledge on the part of the salesmen.
i am 100% sure that xbox 360 would have sold more than these numbers if it would have been launched at the same date as U.S. as it released 1 year later than the U.S most of the people including me had already bought the ntsc U.S versions or the ntsc j versions available in the market. if all these numbers are totalled up and all the retalilers would have provided details the number may be 20 times more than the number here..infact the xbox 360 advertisements were good enough they should launch more programs as skoar 2007 was highly un-proffessional but i am sure in the coming years india would e the largest market and yeah thats true microsoft xbox did not have a background in india most of the people are still waiting for the ps3 as ps2 had launched earlier
$630 for PRO Version ? This is just crazy …
i’m living in an ex-ussr country, and there arent “oficial” xbox 360, only the pirated ones. why? coz noone will buy one, considering we’ll have the same prices as India. 50-60$ is almost impossible, but 2-3 for a pirated game is pretty normal.
Yes the price is too high. its crazy to even think about buying one. Even the games cost min of Rs 2000 and we cant play pirated games as the modded consoles will be banned from xbox live.
Most of the people opting for PS2 as it is affordable.. Lets see if the price of the Xbox comes down..

I got my xbox 360 back in jan 2007. I have played about 40 titles(all pirated). I get them for about 150-200. I even got my console from the grey market. The console was originally made in Korea. Now it is showing the three rings of red light(the ring of death). I checked out all relevant websites and found that it is a very common thing!!!! Many people have bought even
3 or 4 consoles because of this. And even the Americans are finding it difficult to get it replaced through warranty because of the huge number of consoles turned out to be faulty!! I talked to the local shoppers stop and pantaloons guys for a solution and they dont even know of a thing called THE RING OF DEATH. The call centre(1800111100) guy told me to ship my console to an address in New South Wales , Australia!! After reading the customer comments in the websites, I am not sure if my console(FROM INDIA) will ever come back to me if i ship it(no joke).
I am from kolkata and i ask why should someone buy a xbox 360 with so much to face. Its not the grey market’s fault because they are not advanced enough to tweak the 360 unlike the ps2. I had a ps2 before this and played hundreds of titles without any problem, all from the grey market! If you know any solution to the RING OF DEATH please help. My console’s seal is not broken, just that it is from Korea and for your information, even indian consoles have to be shipped to Australia for repair(all of asia i guess). The problem is due to the gpu getting overheatd . I WONT BUY ANOTHER ONE TILL MICROSOFT COMES OUT WITH THE 65 nm CHIP. TAKE MY ADVICE AND WAIT FOR IT.

You claimed that you played 40 pirated titles on a non moded xbox 360 console. I know Xbox 360 console inside-out, and your claim is false.
I dont know if you are a victim or just smart enough to claim things.
This is to inform you that…if your console plays pirated disks, it has definitely been modified. So go ahead repair it yourself…
I had purchased my XBox 360 from Delhi last year, and encountered the ring of death error last week. I called up 1-800-102-1100, where they authorized a free exchange of the console within 10 minutes of our conversation. Today, I have received my new console (a refurbished model, not new in that sense) – which seems to be working fine so far. I have observed significantly lower level of noise and less heating of the console after playing LOTR for nearly 3 hours. There seems however a slower response time as compared to my original console – I will know better on that part after playing for a few days.
Btw, Suvadip, the exchanged console in my case was couriered from Redington, Chennai (+91-44-32529263)- you do not have to ship it or go anywhere to collect it (at-least that’s the way it worked in Bangalore).
Of-course, I fail to see why they will extend this service to somebody who buys pirated console (as Vick says, and so does the rest of internet – that’s the only way to play a pirated game on XBox 36)
A friend of mine is selling an XBox 360 Elite – which he won in some company promotion. He is based in Delhi and expecting INR 31800 (10% discount over MRP). It’s an un-opened box which he received two weeks back. The box comes with bill and warranty – and is the indian model (PAL/India Region Code/220V/50Hz). Microsoft had announced a price cut in the X- box some where in August 2007. Though there is a marked price difference in the American and European markets. I fail to see any price cuts that has ever happened to the X- box and the effect on Indian customers.
In effect X-box sales are abysmally low Dealers and the sales peoples are just trying to cover their failures.

I am not sure though that the console purchased here will be compatabile with games purchased in india(Console here are PAL formatted) and also is the price good enough.

How many pirated Xbox 360 dvd’s you need?..all you need is some stuff,some brains,some education and a pinch of love.
And no hardware failures?..I am on my third.

Ok,Rohit and Chandra,if you guys bought your 360′s from the US you won’t be able to play PAL only region locked games.India is PAL.You can buy your 360;s from UK,Australia or India.
and Anupam,if your xbox 360 is not under warranty just open the damn thing,remove GPU and CPU heatsinks,remove MS thermal crap and put some good quality thermal paste.Enjoy.

HI VERGL .I just bought xbox360 from jalandhar as you said from jawhar nagar. I wasnt happy that becoz i had read the 14000rs tag here and i just went and bought it , the guy was also unprofessional. I had to return next day.
He just handed over the console and two games i chose were bioshock and gears of war. I was amazed to find that what he gave me had no hard drive, and the idiot didnt even tell me that there was no hdd and even more absurdly he didnt even tell me that i needed a memmory card to save the game.
What a moron . I had to stay for next day coz they wont open the shop till 2:30pm. Even then reciept had yet to come from delhi. I bought it for 14000rs coz i thought it had 20gb hdd which he had also mentioned day earlier, but next day he says he didnt. ANd as he didnt tell to buy memmory card i thought it must be having hdd thats why he handed over.
NOW i was stuck couldnt give back the console and i had to buy a freakin low life 64MB memmory card for rs 2000 shame ion microsoft when memmory like 1 gb is for 1000rs . And memmrory card hardly saves two games
And i was getting a halo3 console with hdd from canada for $350 . ANd so i had to order a 20gbb hdd coz its cost was $1000 which is 4000rs while here it costs 5600rs. If i get it modded add 2000rs and more headache. SO i suggest who ever wants xbox360 from jalandhar this is the deal so dont think u will get hdd or any saving device. SO read it 16000rs becaue 14000rs has no meaning coz a moron will not buy any memmory, without it game system is nothing

if u have red ring of death on xbox 360. do the towel trick. the towel trick is when you unplug the video cord or input and u wrap your 360 in 3 or 4 towels and turn it on and let it heat up. after 20 minutes turn the xbox 360. then let it cool down for about 20 to 30 minutes. then try to play it and it will most likley work.
But this is just a temporary soulution. if u want to be fully repaired call microsoft and send it in to them and let them fix it.I live in america so i dont know where the repairing places in india are.
