Gran Turismo Series Lifetime Sales Exceed 55 Million

The Gran Turismo racing franchise started way back in 1997 with the release of the first game by Polyphony Digital. The franchise has grown a lot since then and we’ve seen Gran Turismo games released for a wide selection of platforms. And while we wait for the release of the latest, Gran Turismo 5, Polyphony Digital has revealed that as of December 2009 the lifetime sales of the GT franchise have exceeded 55 million units worldwide.

The series has sold 9.7 million copies in Japan, 19.8 million in North America, 25.3 million across Europe, and 640,000 units in Asia since it first hit the racing scene over 12 years ago. Also Gran Turismo 3 A-Spec is the most successful GT title having sold 14.89 million units worldwide, while second and third spot are closely contested, with Gran Turismo 4 just shading it. GT 4 has sold 10.98 million units worldwide, while the original GT game has sold 10.85 million worldwide coming in third.

The upcoming title in the series, Gran Turismo 5 was rumoured to be getting a track editor, and is apparently at a point where it uses 80 percent of the PS3’s power.
